When most people hear the words private yacht charter, they immediately picture celebrities, billionaires and something with a price tag they probably don’t even want to ask about.

But yacht travel can make sense for more travelers than you might think — especially when you’re planning a milestone trip, traveling with a group or simply looking for a completely different way to experience a destination.

The challenge with a large group is keeping everyone together.

On a yacht, the group itself becomes the experience.

Everyone stays together, but there is still space to disappear with a book, sit on deck with a glass of wine or head into the water.

And every morning brings somewhere new.

Some larger yachts can accommodate groups of 20, 25 or even 30 guests, making this an interesting alternative for extended families or groups of friends who would otherwise be booking a large block of hotel rooms.

There are plenty of beautiful honeymoon resorts.

But even the nicest resort still comes with a lobby, other guests at the pool and a reservation schedule.

A smaller yacht offers something very different.

Imagine waking up in a new harbor every morning, having breakfast prepared on deck and deciding whether your day involves exploring a Croatian island, swimming somewhere inaccessible by road or doing absolutely nothing.

And yacht charters aren't necessarily limited to giant vessels.

For example, some four-cabin yachts accommodate up to eight guests, which means couples can charter a smaller boat without stepping into the price range of a mega-yacht.

For travelers who have already done the all-inclusive resort or overwater bungalow, this is an entirely different kind of honeymoon.

3. A Family Vacation Where Everyone Actually Gets What They Want

Family vacations tend to involve negotiation.

The adults want good food, interesting towns and maybe a little history.

The kids want the water.

Teenagers would generally prefer not to spend their vacation being marched through museums at 9:00 a.m.

A yacht can solve a surprising number of those problems.

At the highest end of yacht travel, the boat itself is only part of the experience.

These travelers aren't necessarily asking:

“What is the cheapest yacht?”

They're asking:

“Which yacht has the right crew?”

“Can the chef accommodate exactly how we like to eat?”

“Can we visit places that aren't part of the standard itinerary?”

“Can the trip move at our pace?”

That's one of the biggest differences between yacht travel and many other luxury vacations.

There really isn't a fixed itinerary.

What Does a Private Yacht Charter Cost?

This is usually the question everyone wants answered.

And the range is enormous.

A yacht featured by one of my Croatia partners, for example, accommodates eight guests in four cabins and currently starts around $27,600 per week. Another four-cabin yacht starts around $30,600 per week, while larger and more luxurious options can climb significantly from there.

When several couples or a family group shares the charter, though, the numbers can start looking very different than people initially expect.

Eight travelers sharing a $27,600 weekly charter works out to approximately $3,450 per person for the yacht itself before additional charter expenses.

That doesn't suddenly make yacht travel inexpensive.

But it does put the experience in a very different context when compared with booking multiple luxury hotel rooms, transportation and private experiences throughout a week.

Why Croatia?

Croatia almost feels designed for yacht travel.

The coastline is filled with islands, medieval towns, secluded bays and small ports that can be explored without spending hours transferring between hotels.

It also gives you something I love in a trip:

You can explore a historic town one day, anchor somewhere quiet the next and still have your room waiting for you every evening.

There is no packing.

No checkout line.

No hauling luggage onto another ferry.

The scenery changes.

Your hotel doesn't.

The Real Question Isn't “Do I Want to Charter a Yacht?”

Most travelers don't wake up one morning and decide they need a yacht.

They decide they want to celebrate a birthday somewhere extraordinary.

Or take the entire family on one big trip.

Or have a honeymoon that doesn't feel like everyone else's honeymoon.

Or travel through Croatia without changing hotels every few days.

That's where yacht travel becomes interesting.

The yacht isn't really the destination.
